ETHIOPIA Yirgacheffe
Mrs. Marta Alemu
Marta Alemu has been cultivating coffee on her farm since the late 1980s. She inherited a 2-hectare plot from her family and, using the profits from her coffee production, purchased 2 additional hectares.
As part of the Lalisaa project, Marta receives comprehensive agronomy support from Sucafina Ethiopia. Lalisaa farmers attend farmer trainings to learn new techniques in cultivation, harvest and processing.
Marta uses agroforestry techniques to produce both food and cash crops. Agroforestry also creates the ideal shaded microclimate for her coffee.
Coffee is intercropped with food and other cash crops using agroforestry techniques. Marta’s farm is organic by default. She upkeeps his farm with periodic mulching, composting and pruning to boost yields.
In addition to coffee, Marta also keeps livestock and cultivates food crops for her family. Marta selectively handpicks ripe, red cherry and lays it to dry on raised beds. She turns cherry frequently to ensure even drying. It takes approximately 2 to 4 weeks for cherry to dry.

Progetto Small Farmer
The Small Farmer Project is the result of an effort to support Ethiopian producers with a market for farm-traceable coffees. In 2020, we purchased the first coffees from some of these producers located in Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, and Guji. This project is made possible by working with Lulo Coffees, an Ethiopian coffee export and development company that connects small-scale producers with buyers. Samples are sent to potential buyers, the price is negotiated on behalf of the farmers, and contracts are accepted only when the producer agrees on the selling price and his or her name appears on the contract for each coffee sold.
‘Our goals with this project would be to help gather and develop long-term relationships between the producers we are already working with and the roasting companies that share the values of transparency, traceability and relationship that this programme represents,’ says Claudia, green coffee buyer for Cafe Imports.
